How to Install WordPress on HostGator in 2020 (Step-by-Step Tutorial)

hey what’s going on ray Delvecchio here from website profit course calm in this quick tutorial we’ll walk through the steps to sign up with Hostgator and install WordPress to create your first website and I’m passionate about this topic because I believe every person should publish their ideas online with either a blog or a website and WordPress is the most professional and flexible way to do it plus the whole process from start to finish it’s
only gonna take you about eight minutes of work so don’t be intimidated if you’re not a computer geek like me you’ll get this done and I’ll show you exactly how to do it I’m on Hostgator home page right now and in their navigation bar they have all the different hosting options that they offer I’m not gonna explain every single one of these I actually have a video where I do that just in really simple terms I’ll link that up in the top right here
and in the description below but really what you need to know is that if you’re just looking to create one website for yourself you can click this get started button here and right now you can see this top banner there offering one year of free domain registration if you get shared hosting for a year or more so if we look at the three main options for shared hosting the hatchling plan is perfect if you just need one website on a single domain and
if you want to do unlimited domains you can upgrade to either the baby or the business plan but for today we’re just gonna set up one domain on the hatchling plan so I will click the Buy Now button and that takes us to our checkout page and I’m gonna register a domain for a project that I’m hoping to launch in the next couple of months and this is 14-day blog.com so I search this out and I think it’s available hopefully nobody registered in the
last couple days and it looks like we’re good to go here I’m able to get free domain registration on this for one year if I sign up for one year of hosting if we scroll down here there’s this option to add domain privacy and what this means is that when you register your domain your contact information is going to be publicly available so to block that you can add domain privacy but if you want to get the best price you can uncheck that and
that’s what I’m gonna do right here then in the second section we can choose our hosting plan and we have our hatchling plan chosen and they automatically set the billing cycle to 36 months which is three years and I definitely recommend that you register for this long if you have the money to do it you’re gonna get the best monthly price if you do it that way but in order to get this free domain registration the minimum is gonna be 12 months and
I feel like 12 months is a great middle ground where that gives you a full year to build your website which is plenty of time to get things up and running and to tinker around with your design and put some content on there and that’s gonna motivate you a lot more than go a month to month especially if you’re paying you know double the price on a month-to-month basis so I’m not sure how long this domain registration offer is gonna be available for
they’ve been running it for the last couple of months so if you see it take advantage of it otherwise it’s just gonna be you know about ten bucks a year for domain registration so that that’s really a low cost in the grand scheme of things and I’m going to show you how to get an even better deal than what they’re giving you here which is 33% off so we’ll do that at the end with a coupon section 3 here is your billing information so just go ahead
and fill out your billing info and you can decide if you want to pay with a credit card or use your PayPal account you can select that over here with the radio button and then down here the next section number 4 is for additional services they’re gonna upsell you with all these but to get started you don’t need any of them in fact there’s a lot of wordpress plugins that can do some of the things that they’re offering here for free so just uncheck

so I’m gonna join you on the page that I get to right after I click the checkout button and here’s the page that I ended up after check out and I also know that Hostgator has created a new customer portal this is their older design but let me show you the new design so here is the upgraded customer portal if you go to Hostgator and log in from there this is what you should get to after you set up your hosting account and you can see they have our
hosting package information right here on the dashboard for 14-day blog comm and it shows the shared hatchling plan you can contact them and go to your account information from up here and on the left-hand panel here this is where you’re gonna access your hosting packages and your domains and I’m gonna jump over now to my email and show you the emails that they send you when you create your domain and hosting account once you sign up the
Hostgator you should have three emails the first email here from billing this gives you your customer portal login information and that’s your highest level account on Hostgator where you can manage all your domains and hosting the second email here is your payment confirmation so that’s basically just a receipt and then the last email here is the most important and this is the one that gives you your hosting account info and that’s how you
access the hosting that you just signed up for and it’s gonna be linked to whatever domain you register when you do that so if I click into this email I’ll be able to see all the details of my hosting package they give you a link here to your control panel along with the username and password that you need to log in and the other thing they give you here are called name servers these are already going to be linked to your domain but let’s say
that you want to register your domain with enough company like GoDaddy you can still host your website with Hostgator all you would have to do is put these name servers into your GoDaddy settings and that would tell GoDaddy that you want that domain to be linked to Hostgator but the advantage of buying your domain along with hosting together is you don’t need to worry about that step they’re automatically going to be linked so the next thing that
we need to do here to install WordPress is good or a hosting control panel so let’s click on this link over here and open it in a new tab and here’s our control panel login so we can copy and paste the username and password that we just got to see if this works and I want to mention here that the last time that I did this the username doesn’t work immediately it takes a little bit of time there’s a little lag time between when Hostgator sets this
account up for you and when you’re ready to log in so the best thing you can do here is if it doesn’t work right away just give it 24 hours and try and log in tomorrow everything should be good so I’m trying out my login information now just a couple of minutes after registering my account let’s see if it works and we actually got good news this time and logged in right away so I didn’t even have to wait until the next day so just give that a
shot and like I said if you get any error logging in just give it a little bit of time so this is where you can manage everything within your hosting account they give you a lot of options within here you can dig into the files on your web server you can create custom databases they give you all those popular links right here and WordPress itself is a database driven software system so it’s going to have a MySQL database associated with it but we
don’t have to worry about any of those tech details all we have to do is click on this WordPress installer button and this is going to bring us to a script that’s going to let us install WordPress with one click so right from here we select our domain name and it should be available from the drop down and if you’d like you can install WordPress on a subdirectory but I would say probably 90 to 95 percent of the time there’s no need to do it you
just want to put WordPress right on your top-level domain so we’re not going to put any thing into this directory field we’re just gonna click Next and then we have to set up our WordPress account so we’ll put on our blog title for the admin username I usually just do my first name all lowercase I can type in my first name and I’ll put just put my last initials in there as well as my admin email and we have this checkbox here which tells us that
WordPress is going to create a new database and we also have to agree to the Terms of Service and we’ll be able to install and within a couple of seconds here we’re gonna have our WordPress login information that we can copy and paste to start building our website and they’re showing us that right here tells us that we have WordPress installed to 14-day blog com along with our WordPress username and password so as soon as you get all these user
names for your Hostgator portal for your Hostgator website hosting package and for WordPress make sure you save your username and password for all them so you’re not confusing them I’m gonna go ahead and just copy and paste this right over here and try and log in so we can click this button in a new tab this is going to take us to our WordPress admin login you can see the login page is pretty similar to what the other one look like and we just
need to fill in our WordPress login credentials and with this done we’ll be able to see our WordPress dashboard and right now they’re they’re given us a screen to verify our admin email so I’m just going to make sure that this is correct I’m gonna click this email is correct and we hopefully will go right to our admin screen now and there it is you can see we have a ton of popups on here these are all due to WordPress plugins that they
automatically install for you I want to select every plug-in that I need I want to eliminate all the ones I don’t need just to make sure that my site it’s gonna be optimized and run as fast as possible so I normally go into the plugins here and just delete everything that’s gonna be completely up to you but let’s just take a look at our website we can hover over this home icon right here and click the visit site button I just opened that in a new
